To Benefit: Our Sisters’ School

Our Sisters’ School is a tuition-free charter school serving middle school girls (5th through 8th grades) from disadvantaged backgrounds who reside in the greater New Bedford area (63% of the children in New Bedford live below the federal poverty level).

Many educators and researchers have come to believe that young girls, especially girls from low income and minority populations, do better in an atmosphere devoid of the distractions and competition inevitably caused by the presence of boys. With that in mind, Our Sisters' School’s mission is to educate and inspire middle school girls from the Greater New Bedford area to reach their full potential in a safe, supportive and challenging environment. Middle school is a crucial period for students as these are the years when lasting attitudes and core values are permanently molded, in a safe and supportive environment, these middle school girls will receive the chance they need to succeed.

Proceeds from MF Boston's charity events in 2008 will go towards supporting the extra-curricular activities for thirty students during the 2008-2009 academic year and summer of 2009. Students will receive additional arts, music, drama and dance programs, community-awareness field trips, sports and physical education activities, tutoring and mentoring, academic work and enrichment activities during the summer as well as preparation for secondary education.
